Marvellous moons

This week I have taken inspiration from the orb that lives up in our skies, the moon. If you have seen photographs of the moon you will know it has a beautifully textured surface of craters. I have decided to try and create my own version of this with some simple household materials. 

You will need some thin box card, I used a shoebox, a sheet of alfoil, and some PVA glue. 

Firstly, cut a square of your box card, it can be any size, but I would suggest at least 20x20cm. Use the scraps from your box to cut a series of circles and donut shapes, these will be your craters. They don’t have to be perfect, but try to make a range of sizes. 

Glue your circles and donuts to your square card randomly and allow some drying time. Next, apply a thin layer of PVA all over your work, you could use an old paintbrush, or even just your fingers. Lay your alfoil over the top, beginning in the middle, gently push down the foil into the craters and cracks, then work your way out to the edges. You should end up with your crater textures showing clearly on the alfoil surface. 

Once this is dry flip over and draw a circle on the back, use a compass or just trace around a bowl or plate. Cut out the circle to finish your moon.

Try sponging a little black or grey ( or blue) paint over the craters for a little more added effect. You could make this into a hanging work, in which you might like to repeat the process on the back, so that as your moon spins it will look shimmery both sides. Otherwise this will look great stuck to your wall or roof, some matching stars or meteors would look amazing! How about the whole solar system! This same technique would work very well if you wanted to make rockets or robots too. The skys (not) the limit!
